Failure of neo-arsphenamine in relapsing vivax malaria.

The civilian internment camp in Changi, Gaol, Singapore was moved in May 1944. to huts in open country in 1944. Within a fortnight cases of Plasmodium vivax malaria in a population of 3000, hitherto free of malaria. This early intimation of trouble ahead heralded a vivax epidemic with over 500 cases in a few months. There was enough quinine, but little else. Relapses were frequent and we heard almost daily the melancholy story of attack and attack, controlled only by the suppressive therapy that we were able to give to none but the fortunate few.
