Periodic or cyclically recurring phenomena of vivax malaria infections.

Intermittent fevers recurring as paroxysysms recurring as semi-tertians, tertians, quartans, quintanes, septans and nonans are referred to by Jones (1923) as mentioned by Hippocrates. There is no reason to doubt that his tertians and quartans can be identified as the vivax and quartans malaria of current nosology, while it may be surmised that his more elaborate discussions of exarcebations and crisis probably relate to the more chronic aspects of infections.
