It has commonly stated that quinine and quinacrine (atabrine), which are suppressive agents in vivax malaria, cure few, if any patients. The concept that suppressive drugs are non-curative has been strongly reinforced by experience in World War II with Southwest Pacific vivax. However, not every patient treated with suppressive drugs experienced relapse.
