Malaria is the most important parasitic &ease in humans. New cases diagnosed every year total 300 to 500 million annually, causing 1-2,000,000 deaths.’ Th &- ease is endemic in developing countries of the tropics and subtropics. However, the recent increase in international travel to countries where malaria is endemic, has caused a rise in the incidence of this disease in the home countries oftravelers.2 For this reason, chemoprophylaxis has become a major cornerstone in the prevention of “traveler’s malaria.”3
