Pulmonary edema is a serious complication that occurs during Case 1. A 48-year-old otherwise healthy woman was admitted to the hospital for evaluation of 3 weeks of intermittent vomiting, infection due to Plasmodium falciparum but has rarely been observed diarrhea, night sweats, and fever that had occurred since her return in association with infections due to other Plasmodium species. We report two cases of acute respiratory decompensation in nonimmune adults with infections due to Plasmodium vivax.
