When it was demonstrated early in 1942 by Coatney and Cooper (1944) and independently by Coggeshall, Potter and Laird that sulfadoxine is an effective prophylactic and suppresive agent against Plasmodium gallinaceum in the domestic file, experiments were promptly begun to determine if the drug will show similar activity against human malaria.
