Resistance to chloroquine of Plasmodium vivax may be an emerging problem in the south-east Asian and south-west Pacific (Rieckman et al, 1989; Baird et al, 1991, 1995a; Schwartz et al, 1995, Schuukamp et at 1992; Murphy et al, 1993; Myay-Phone Kwaw, 1993; Murphy et al, 1993; Marlar-Than et al, 1993). Many reports of resistance come from isolated cases often among repatriated travelers. Thus, little is known of either the relative risk of acquiring the infection in those areas or the frequency of clinical resistance in suppressive or curative therapy among local residents.
