The incidence of malaria in the United States troops in Vietnam is high with approximately 6000 cases reported in 1966. Of this total group, 98 per cent were due to infections with Plasmodium falciparum. On the other hand those cases which develop in servicemen following their return to the United States are predominantly caused by P. vivax. Although original studies indicated that 50% of the cases were infected with P. vivax, more recent figures released by the National Communicable Disease Center, suggested a figure of 84 per cent of the total cases imported in 1967 were caused by this organism.
