Treatment of Plasmodium vivax malaria--time for a change?

Cases of Plasmodium vivax that relapse despite conventional courses for primaquine (15mg daily for 14 days) appear to be increasing in number. One recent estimate is that 17.5% of P. vivax infection acquired in Thailand are resistant to conventional doses (Bunnag et al, 1994). We undertook a retrospective analysis of all patients with P. vivax seen at the hospital for Tropical Diseases in London, UK between January 1994 and June 1995 to assess the frequency of relapse.
