PAVE Training Materials: Testing and Treatment for P. vivax

The Partnership for Vivax Elimination (PAVE) has developed the following package of training materials to use in training health workers on the use of point-of-care G6PD testing with tafenoquine and primaquine for the prevention of relapse with P. vivax malaria.

The PAVE team is making these available to support quality training across the world. The overarching goals of the training package are as follows:

  • to ensure comprehensive understanding of the importance of testing for G6PD and treating P. vivax malaria for patients and their communities;
  • to demonstrate full competency in the use, and interpretation of quantitative G6PD test results and treatment algorithms
  • to demonstrate full competency in providing appropriate P. vivax treatment based on the results of the G6PD tests and assessment of patient eligibility criteria for use of 8-aminoquinolines (8-AQs).

The training package has been designed in a modular way for flexibility and should be adapted depending on which cadre of health worker is being trained and the country context. The training provides an overview of the current issue with Plasmodium vivax globally, training goals, core learning outcomes, intended audience, session structure and topics covered, construction of training agenda for different types of health workers, training quality assurance, evaluation & competency checks and training reporting. There is an introductory session followed by 6 sessions and a wrap up session. There are also mini scenarios and role plays to use as part of the training sessions. The application of these scenarios will depend on national treatment guidelines in each country, so please ensure that these guidelines are covered comprehensively by the trainers ahead of introducing the scenarios.

Training materials are designed for use either by National Malaria Control Programmes or their partners seeking to introduce new tools for better vivax malaria. The training deck and facilitators notes can also be used by research partners undertaking operational or implementation research to assess the use of new tools within national health system settings. This work was supported with funding from Unitaid.
